Dear Emily,

A friend of mine asked me to help him out by getting him a cell phone line on my account.  He said he would pay his share but, so far, he hasn't. What should I do?  Should I be understanding and give him more time, or should I take him off my account?  Please help.  Thank you.

----------------------------------------Miss Emily's advice----------------------------

Take him off your account NOW! And do not let him take advantage of you in the future. He made an agreement with you. You helped him by giving him access to a cell phone, and his obligation was to pay for it. The fact he wanted you to do it in the first place, shows he had bad credit and no money. And even if he'd lost his job, and he was in a financial fix because if it, there was not going to be any chance of him making good on the payment without an income. No, this is your life, and you need to take charge of it. Learn how to say no to others early in life. Bottom line: He dropped the ball, now you drop his line on your phone -- and the sooner the better. If he gets pissy, tough. And by the way, never co-sign a loan either. That's one way to walk into a fate worse than death.
