Dear Miss Emily:

There's this guy I like, and we used to talk and text each other everyday. But when I see him at school, he stares and smiles at me but doesn't talk to me. What should i do?

It's hard to know his intent. If he was talking to you and texting outside of school, it seems odd that it stops at school. He could be afraid to take the relationship to the next level if he's never had a girlfriend. I think it's up to you to make an attempt to get him to  open up at school. You can continue to guess until your brain freezes, and still not know why he behaves the way he does. But if neither one of you makes a move, nothing happens. Try to go up to him when the opportunity strikes, and start a conversation. If he seems visably shaken, or cool to you, it's not worth your time pursuing him. Again, who know why he would do such a thing, but you can't really know the inner workings of his mind. The reason he does this may have nothing to do with you, and everything to do with him and his insecurities.
