Dear Miss Emily:
I am currently a senior in high school, but my girlfriend just went off to college. I don't know whether to break up with her or stay with her. She is only 2.5 hours away, but i want both of us to have fun...and long distance relationships are hard. It is already causing problems. What do I do?

-----------------------------Miss Emily's advice----------------------

As you can imagine, I get many letters about this sort of thing. And my mantra has always been long-distance relationships are hard even in the best circumstances. But you are wise. To commit to this relationship while she's off to college, even though the distance isn't insurmountable, restricts each of you from having new experiences -- and that also means with the opposite sex. I think it's time to talk to her about your feelings on this matter. You seem to want to explore options at school -- be able to hang out and party with friends without feeling guilty that you are, somehow, betraying your girlfriend. I think she should feel the same way. Many first-year college students do better when they are no longer attached to a boyfriend/girlfriend back home.
