Dear Miss Emily:

What does my girlfriend mean when she says: "I have been thinking about us, and I think we are drifting far apart from each other and I hope we can make it, although . . .

--------------------------------Miss Emily's advice----------------------

It could be that she's the one drifting and wants to drag you in on it in order to not take all the responsibility. Get to the bottom of why she thinks this is the case. If you feel there are also areas that need work -- on close examination --  see if you and she can decide on a course of action to improve the relationship. But if one person (your girlfriend) thinks the relationship has run its course, and is using "drifting" as a code word for it, there isn't much you can do to change her mind. But ask for total honesty, and emphasize that it will save you unnecessary confusion. As well, you deserve it.
