Dear Miss Emily:

I really like this girl, but she has a boyfriend. Recently, her boyfriend has been hurting her emotionally. She calls me at night and talks about how bad she feels. I want her to break up with her boyfriend but, at the same time, I don't want to see her sad or hurt. I always end up helping her get back with her boyfriend. What should I do?

-------------------------------------------------Miss Emily's advice---------------------------------------

By counseling her on what to do when her boyfriend hurts her, you've tried so hard to not put your feelings in the mix, your objectivity has taken a backseat -- and it may be counterproductive for both of you. She needs a friend to air her problems with the boyfriend, but I don't think you're the proper choice. Take a stand, and let her in on your true feelings for her because, if you don't, you'll find yourself a frustrated ball with a cover of resentment.
